  When Joel M. Mann opened his own criminal defense law practice in 2006, he wanted to build a law firm where clients received exceptionally personalized service. Joel believes that keeping lines of communication open and treating the attorney-client relationship as a partnership are important keys to achieving successful resolutions for those who have been charged in criminal cases. “I really wanted my clients to not feel like a number,” he says. “I wanted to keep the firm small, so I’m the one handling the case. I’m the one listening to them and learning about them and their situation so that I can properly represent them.” Called to Criminal Defense A California native, Joel received a B.A. degree in political science from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, in 1997 and headed to Washington, D.C. to work for members of Congress and political organizations. While in Washington, he met his wife-to-be, a Nevadan, and they decided to move back to her hometown of Las Vegas. He enrolled at the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas – then in its second year. He landed a clerkship with criminal defense lawyer Steven B. Wolfson, who is now the Clark County District Attorney. “I knew pretty much immediately that criminal defense was what I wanted to do,” Joel says. He deepened his criminal law expertise as a student by joining the law school’s Juvenile Justice Clinic, where he was able to represent underprivileged juveniles in criminal matters. He also did a summer internship at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. After Joel earned his J.D. in 2002, he worked in the Appellate Division of the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for several years before joining a Las Vegas criminal defense firm. He stayed with the firm for two years before launching the Law Office of Joel M. Mann. Dedicated to Helping People Joel’s practice is devoted solely to criminal law. He represents clients in a broad range of areas, from murder to drug charges to misdemeanors. No matter the size of the case, Joel is devoted to fighting for his clients and obtaining the best possible outcomes for them. He has argued and won before the Nevada Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He is among the few attorneys in Nevada (and the country) who is sworn in before the U.S. Supreme Court. Joel’s efforts have resulted in many acquittals, dismissals and sentence reductions for his clients. “I enjoy helping people out when they’re in their most desperate situations,” Joel says of his practice. “I do not accept it when the government is telling me that ‘this is the way it is.’ I go out and fight for my client’s rights no matter who is telling me.” In addition to his busy legal practice, Joel devotes time to the Nevada Attorneys for Criminal Justice, serving as president of that organization from 2009 to 2010 and earning the organization’s Outstanding Service and Leadership award. He is also a member of the National Organization of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Additionally, Joel serves as a board member of the Las Vegas Anti-Defamation League and serves on the board of his synagogue, where he is a past president. In his limited spare time, Joel enjoys road biking, hiking and spending time with his family.
